When Knowledge Is Taken Away: A Sign of the End Times

Quick Answer

The Prophet warned that sacred knowledge will leave the world not by books disappearing, but by the death of scholars — after which ignorant leaders misguide people, Islam fades like an old garment, and eventually even the Quran is lifted overnight. These are among the minor signs of the Hour, and they arrive in stages.

The Warning Nobody Wants to Hear

There is a warning from the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, that should make every one of us stop and think. He told his Companions that before the end, knowledge would be taken away from this world. He did not mean every kind of knowledge. Medicine, engineering, and the crafts people build their lives around will go on. He meant the sacred kind — the understanding of what Allah wants from us, how to worship Him, and what separates right from wrong. Look around today and that kind of knowledge already feels harder to find. The voices are loud and the opinions never end, but deep, grounded understanding is growing rare. This sign is not only about some distant age. Its early stages may already be unfolding in our own lifetime.

How Knowledge Will Actually Disappear

So how does knowledge leave? The Prophet himself explained the method, and it is nothing like what most people imagine. Allah will not strip knowledge out of people's hearts in one sudden sweep. Books will still sit on shelves, and the internet will still answer questions. Instead, knowledge will leave through the death of the scholars — one learned person after another, until none remain. That is the wording of the narration reported in Sahih al-Bukhari (100) and Sahih Muslim (2673): knowledge will be taken away by the passing of the people of knowledge, not by being snatched from the hearts of men. It is a quiet process. Nobody notices the exact moment it happens, because libraries stay full long after the living teachers are gone.

Why the Death of Scholars Matters So Much

You might wonder why the loss of scholars matters if their books survive. The answer is that real knowledge has always traveled from heart to heart, not just from page to page. A teacher does more than recite words — he shows how to understand them, when a ruling applies and when it does not, and how the Arabic of the Quran actually works. A student learns the questions to ask, not only the answers. When that living chain breaks, something no library can replace is lost: judgment, context, and the humility that comes from sitting at someone's feet for years. What remains is information without wisdom. And information without wisdom is exactly what fills the gap in the next stage of this sign.

For centuries, sacred knowledge passed from teacher to student through hand-copied pages like these.

Then the Ignorant Become Leaders

The same narration continues with the part that should concern us most. Once no scholar is left, people will take the ignorant as their leaders. Questions about the religion will be put to them, and they will answer with no knowledge behind their words — going astray themselves and leading others astray with them. You can already see the early shape of this today. The warning signs are not hard to recognize:

Information Is Not Knowledge

Here is something worth understanding clearly, because it confuses many people. Reading and writing are more widespread today than ever before, and answers to almost any question sit a few taps away. But that is information, not knowledge. Information tells you what someone said; knowledge tells you whether it is true, how it was understood by those who came before, and what to do with it. Knowledge is a state of the heart — a level of awareness that makes a person careful, humble, and slow to judge. The Prophet's warning was never about the printing press or the internet shutting down. It was about hearts losing the living, careful understanding that once passed from teacher to student like a flame from one lamp to another.

Islam Will Fade Like an Old Garment

The sign does not stop with the scholars. Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman reported that the Messenger of Allah said Islam itself would vanish the way the pattern on a garment fades with time — slowly, then all at once. There will come a day when people will not even know what prayer is, what fasting is, what Hajj is, or what charity is. Think about that image for a moment: a shirt whose design was once bright and clear, now washed so many times that only faint traces remain. That is how the religion itself will look in the hearts of people — present in name, but with its shape and meaning worn away. (Sunan Ibn Majah 4049)

The Old People Who Only Remember One Sentence

Hudhayfah's narration goes on to describe the last remnants of the religion. Small groups of people will remain — very old, very weak — and the only thing they will still say is 'La ilaha illallah' (there is no god but Allah). When Silah ibn Zufar heard this, he could not accept it. He looked at Hudhayfah and asked: if these people know nothing of prayer, nothing of fasting, nothing of Hajj or charity — what good will 'La ilaha illallah' do them? Hudhayfah fell silent. Silah asked a second time, then a third. Finally Hudhayfah answered him, three times over: at least this 'La ilaha illallah' will save them from the Fire. It is a heartbreaking picture — and a mercy hidden inside the bleakness.

The Night the Quran Is Lifted

Then comes an even darker stage. Abdullah ibn Mas'ud said that a time would come when even the Quran would be taken away from the earth. When people asked him what would happen to the Quran memorized in the hearts of the Huffaz, he described a night when people would recite the Quran and go to sleep — and wake in the morning remembering nothing of it. Not a verse, not a word. They would begin forgetting even 'La ilaha illallah' itself. Imagine waking up one morning to find the most precious words you ever knew simply gone from your memory. This is reported in Sunan al-Darimi (3207), and it shows how complete the removal of knowledge will become: first the scholars, then the practices, and finally the Book itself.

On the night the Quran is lifted, even those who memorized it will wake remembering nothing.

Until 'Allah' Is No Longer Said on Earth

The final stage is the quietest of all. The Messenger of Allah said that the Hour will not come until the remembrance of Allah is no longer said on earth — until there comes a time when no one says 'Allah, Allah' at all. (Sahih Muslim 148) Notice the order in which these signs arrive, even though they are not always described in sequence: first the scholars are taken, then the knowledge of prayer and fasting fades, then the Quran is lifted, and at last even the name of Allah falls silent on people's tongues. Each stage is darker than the one before. And each one begins with something small and easy to ignore — a scholar whose passing nobody mourns, a practice quietly dropped, a verse memorized but never reviewed.

What This Means for Us Right Now

So what should a believer do with all of this? The first thing is to refuse to guess dates. None of these narrations give a timetable, and trying to predict the Hour is itself a mistake the texts warn against. The second is to treat knowledge as urgent: learn from living teachers while they are here, sit with people of understanding, and ask questions instead of scrolling past answers. The third is to teach your children, because every generation that fails to pass the flame on brings the darkness one step closer. And the last is the simplest: ask Allah to keep you firm, and — as the early Muslims did when they heard these warnings — to call you to Him before those days arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does 'knowledge being taken away' mean all books and libraries will disappear?

No. The narration itself rules that out — it says knowledge will not be snatched from people's hearts. What leaves is the living scholarship: the teachers die, the chains of learning break, and books remain without anyone left who truly understands them. (Sahih al-Bukhari 100; Sahih Muslim 2673)

Who are the 'ignorant leaders' the narration warns about?

Anyone people turn to for religious answers without that person having real knowledge. The danger is not only that they are wrong — it is that they answer with confidence, people follow them, and both the leader and the follower go astray together.

Will 'La ilaha illallah' really help people who know nothing of prayer or fasting?

According to Hudhayfah's answer in the narration, yes — at least this much: it will save them from the Fire. He repeated it three times when Silah ibn Zufar pressed him. It is not presented as an excuse to abandon worship, but as a final mercy for people left with almost nothing. (Sunan Ibn Majah 4049)

Can anyone know when the Quran will be lifted?

No. The narrations describe stages, not a schedule — first the scholars, then the practices, then the Quran, then even the name of Allah. Nobody is given a date, and setting one has always been condemned. The right response is to act as if the time is short: learn, teach, and hold on to what you know.
